Reader Question: Health & Fitness

Milk does a body good

Q: I am an avid weight lifter and train pretty consistently.  I work out 4-5 times per week with weights and I do cardio 3-4 times per week for about 30 minutes.  I am pretty lean and am happy with my muscle development but I am curious about one thing.  I am always hearing mixed things about what the best food is to eat post workout.  I know whey protein is a great choice.  My question is should I mix it with milk or water when consumed right after a workout?

Answer: Milk. Milk contains both casein and whey protein.  At roughly 16 grams of protein per 2 cups ( with 13 of those coming from casein and the rest from whey) This is important because research shows that casein and whey taken together after workouts aid muscle growth better than whey alone.  Two cups of milk also contains 24 grams of sugar from lactose, which can help boost insulin levels to balance blood sugar and restore muscle glycogen.
