Going to the Gym? Don’t forget your ipod…

Ipod

Are you a music junkie?  Do you like to work out as well?  If so, toting your Ipod with you to the gym may help you have a more intense, more effective workout, experts say.

New research has shown that women who listened to music while working out performed better on certain exercises.  Not only that, but the trainees were also happier.

Kinda makes sense, right?  Lots of people like music, and lot’s of people like to work out.  Combine the two and it can work wonders.  According to researchers, there are two basic reasons why music can pump up your work outs:

1. Psychological – music did for women in the study what it does for most people in normal situations – it made them happy.  Basically, having the tunes going while working out helps to distract you from the pain and anything else going on around you.

2. Physical - researchers also guessed that having music bumping during workouts could increase alertness and possibly even cause a surge of adrenalin, helping with performance.

So music can definitely be good.  There is one caveat though.  Make sure the volume isn’t set too high.  Experts warn that long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss.  To give you perspective on how loud that is think about this:

- Normal conversation is about 60 decibels.

- Noise on a busy street can reach 85 decibels.

- Motorcycles and the like can be between 120 and 150 decibels

So what’s the best way to go?

Many people prefer top 10 hits that are higher in tempo. Pick music that you like that gets you pumped up or makes you happy.  Just watch that volume.
