As August approaches, the temperature spikes. If you can manage to shirk responsibility for one day, take the chance to go enjoy your local beach. Be prepared for your ocean/lake/pond/pool excursion with our pack list – don’t worry, you can send a postcard or snag a seashell for us in gratitude.

Your Pack List:

  • Sunscreen – Leather bags are hot. Your face as a leather bag? Not so much. Reapply sunscreen every hour or whenever you take a dip, using a generous amount (experts recommend an egg-sized dollop of product) each time. New spray sunscreens make protection even easier to obtain – just make sure to spray evenly and cover your whole body when applying. Anything below SPF 15 is about as effective as light cigarettes while quitting smoking, so make sure to keep those numbers high. Some favorites:
    • Banana Boat Ultra Defense Continuous Spray, SPF 30
    • Coppertone Sport Lotion, SPF 30 + higher
    • Neutrogena Healthy Defense Oil-Free Sunblock Stick SPF 30
    • Aveda Dual Nature Face Protection, SPF 15
  • Towels – Bring an oversized one to share or hog. We like the Espalma by Cobra Hibiscus Beach towels.
  • Snacks – Freeze a couple bottles of water the night before your trip so they defrost throughout your day.
    • Throw some grapes next to your bottled water in the fridge. They’re refreshing under the hot sun.
    • Sleeves of crackers keep well in the sun – Ritz crackers are always satisfying.
    • Granola bars – Nature’s Valley makes a kind for every craving.
  • A Cooler for your snacks – Pick a small one. Lugging a heavy cooler across the sand can ruin any beach day. Stick with a classic cooler like Coleman.
  • Beach Umbrella – They’re great sun protection, as well as a good place to catch an afternoon nap with waves as your soundtrack. Pick your color and size here.
  • Lip Balm – Don’t forget to protect your lips, too. Dirty Girl makes a good raspberry- flavored one with SPF 18.
  • Beach Reading – Pack magazines and a book for your time between swimming and beach volleyball.
    • We love: Nylon, Maxim, Vanity Fair, Esquire, Men’s Health, Allure.
    • For books, try: Mary Karr’s Cherry, Pedro Juan Gutierrez’s Tropical Animal, Richard Price’s Ladies Man, Chuck Palahnuick’s Stranger Than Fiction.
  • Sunglasses – Who doesn’t love the 80’s sunglass look? Check out Ray-Bans.
  • Beach Ball – So many colors and sizes…make friends fast on the beach. Pick your favorite here.
  • Flip-flops – Another beach basic that can bring you to the bar for happy hour afterwards. Reef makes style for guys and girls.
  • Boogie Boards – Show off your skills or find someone to give you lessons. Grab one here.
  • Hairbrush – Detangle, primp and move on with your beach goddess status. Check out Goody.com

Enjoy the trip!

Now that you’ve finally got your new iPhone 4 to work, the next step is to throw a case on it (if reception allows).  Fortunately for all of the minimalists out there, Case-Mate has created a sleeve for your iPhone that simplifies things while you’re on the go.  If you’re one of those people who never has pockets (or doesn’t want to cram them with more than necessary), Case-Mate’s iPhone 4 ID Credit Card Case may be the solution.  Having less but also more, this revolutionary case has an ultra slim slot on the back side that allows you to store bare necessities – ID, cash credit or debit cards.  For anyone who wants to give their wallet a break (or just doesn’t need one when it comes right down to it) check out the Case-Mate iPhone 4 ID Credit Card Case here.

The sad truth about buying a Porsche Boxster is that – if you’re a man – you get lumped into a couple of categories pretty quickly.  People peg you as the guy who is having a midlife crisis.  Next, they assume you have money – but not a ton of it.  Then there’s the whole “cute” car thing.  The Boxster’s unisex appeal makes it great for men or women. And that’s just it: it’s not entirely macho enough for every guy out there. But that’s ok because women need sexy sports cars too.  So for the men (and women) out there who still haven’t found a Porsche that’s both “cheap” and has some bravado, the new Porsche Boxster Spyder just might work.  It’s aggressive exterior styling will let onlookers know immediately that it’s not just a “regular” Boxster.  Add in a laundry list of other features along with more horsepower than the Boxster S and handling to rival any 911, and it just may be the solution to all of your rainy day woes. Of course, if you want something a little more sedate that will still give you wind-in-your-hair luxury you can always spring for the 2011 Mercedes E550 Cabriolet.
